While the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) prepares to file a chargesheet on December 12, concerns are growing over what truly happened in Singapore, where the beloved artist breathed his last.

In a significant update, Special Investigation Team (SIT) chief and Assam Police Special DGP M.P. Gupta announced that the probe is now in its final stages. Gupta stated that all crucial evidence, including forensic findings, medico-legal reports, and other documents from Singapore, has been received. The chargesheet, he said, will rely on a combination of oral testimony, electronic data, and documentary evidence.

Gupta also emphasized that the entire investigation has been carried out strictly as per legal provisions, though he refrained from commenting on speculations surrounding the case.

But even as the CID prepares to submit its findings, political and public curiosity has only intensified.

Earlier this week, Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi wrote to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, demanding clarity and transparency from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Gogoi’s letter refers to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s explosive claim in the state Assembly that Zubeen’s death was a “pre-planned murder” based on SIT inputs.

This assertion, combined with reports that one of the accused individuals was directly involved in organising the North East India Festival 2025—where Zubeen was scheduled to perform—has triggered widespread speculation. Gogoi pointed out that the organisation linked to this accused individual has received lakhs of rupees in MEA funding over the years.

Adding to the intrigue, Gogoi questioned why the Singapore festival continued as usual on 19, 20 and 21 September, despite the shocking news of Zubeen Garg’s death. Many have echoed the sentiment that the event’s continuation raises uncomfortable questions about what the organisers knew—and when they knew it.

With the SIT confirming that all foreign evidence has now been secured, observers say the upcoming chargesheet may shed new light—but might also open new lines of inquiry. Meanwhile, Gogoi has urged the MEA to publicly clarify:

  • What was the MEA’s role and oversight in the Singapore event?

  • What relationship, if any, did MEA officials have with the accused individual linked to the festival?

  • How does the MEA view the Chief Minister’s claim of a “pre-planned murder”?

As the December 12 chargesheet date approaches, the state waits anxiously. While investigators assert that the probe has followed all legal procedures, many believe that the real story of what happened in Singapore is yet to fully emerge.
