The victim has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a resident of Dubalia Para, who worked at a small local garment factory.According to official sources, Das was first dragged out of the factory by a group of people and assaulted. He was later tied to a tree in a semi-conscious state, beaten again with sticks and eventually set on fire. The killing took place beside a local highway, leading to severe traffic congestion in the area. The attack reportedly occurred in front of several hundred people. Videos of the lynching circulated widely on social media, drawing shock and condemnation. Many users described the footage as “too horrific to watch.”Despite the public nature of the crime, police have not filed a First Information Report (FIR). The concerned authorities in Bangladesh said they are trying to locate the victim’s family members and will formally register a case once a complaint is lodged. The police’s stance has drawn sharp criticism. Social media users and rights activists have questioned why law enforcement has not initiated a suo motu case, especially given the availability of video evidence. Questions have also been raised over the absence of police at the time of the attack.Bhaluka police station duty officer Ripon Mia told local media that the youth was accused of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad, following which “an agitated crowd carried out the killing.”However, no clear details have emerged regarding when, where or before whom the alleged remarks were made. Locals and officials have been unable to provide specific evidence supporting the allegation.Bangladesh has witnessed several incidents in recent years where members of religious minorities were attacked or killed over alleged blasphemy. In many cases, investigations later found the allegations to be unsubstantiated.A section of police officials and sources have described such incidents as a form of mob terrorism, where false or unverified accusations are spread deliberately to incite violence and justify extrajudicial killings. Also Read: Why Were Media Houses Attacked as Bangladesh Mourned Sharif Osman Hadi?AdvertismentAdvertisment Read the Next Article
