Ten Arrested in Connection with Lynching of Hindu Youth in Bangladesh's Mymensingh

The police in Bangladesh have detained ten individuals linked to the brutal mob killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment worker, in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district, amid heightened tensions in the country.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested seven suspects, identified as Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain (38), and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46). Police separately apprehended three others: Md. Azmol Hasan Sagir (26), Md. Shahin Mia (19), and Md. Nazmul.

Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, announced the arrests via a post on X, emphasising coordinated operations by law enforcement across various locations.

The incident, which occurred on December 18 around 9:00 pm, involved Das being beaten to death by a mob on allegations of blasphemy. Reports indicate his body was subsequently set ablaze, sparking widespread condemnation and outrage.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council denounced the attack as a grave assault on communal harmony, describing it in a statement as a targeted killing that undermined social cohesion.

The lynching unfolded against a backdrop of national unrest triggered by the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi on December 18 in Singapore. Hadi, convener of Inqilab Moncho and a candidate for the February 2026 parliamentary elections, succumbed to gunshot wounds from an attack in Dhaka on December 12, where assailants on a motorcycle fired at him while he was travelling by rickshaw in the Bijoynagar area.
