Trump Declares Greenland 'Vital' for US 'Golden Dome' Missile Defence,

US President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that acquiring control of Greenland is crucial for "national security", specifically tying it to his administration's ambitious "Golden Dome" air and missile defence initiative.

In a social media post, Trump said, "The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building."

He has repeatedly pledged to wrest the Arctic territory from Denmark, a NATO ally, arguing that US oversight would significantly strengthen the alliance's capabilities. "NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES," he added. "Anything less than that is unacceptable."

The statement was issued just hours before a scheduled White House meeting involving senior Danish and Greenlandic officials with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussions aim to address the escalating tensions over the strategically important island.

In an effort to address American "anxieties" about Arctic security, Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said that Copenhagen is enhancing its military footprint in Greenland and engaging with partners on expanding NATO's role in the region.

Trump, meanwhile, urged the alliance to take the lead in developing the comprehensive, multi-layered missile shield. "IF WE DON'T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!" he warned in his post.
