UN Human Rights Council urged to investigate violence in Bangladesh

The OHCHR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights) office in Bangladesh has been called upon to investigate the killing of three indigenous people in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) and widespread attacks on Hindu minorities during Durga Puja, that concluded recently.

According to reports, three indigenous persons were killed on September 28, 2025, in Guimara, CHT, while protesting against the gang rape of a 14-year-old indigenous girl. This incident has sparked concern among human rights groups, who are also citing at least 49 attacks on Hindu minorities' places of worship during Durga Puja, which concluded on October 2, 2025.

Mr. Suhas Chakma, Director of the Rights & Risks Analysis Group, addressed the council, emphasizing the need for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Bangladesh to probe these incidents. He expressed concern that silence on these issues would undermine the victims' faith in the organization and raise questions about its impartiality.

The OHCHR had previously conducted a fact-finding mission in Bangladesh, which found reasonable grounds to believe international crimes, including crimes against humanity, were committed. However, the report was not presented to the council, sparking further concerns about transparency and accountability of the organization.
