"The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) in Sadar Hills, Manipur, has designated October 3 as 'Separation Day,' announcing a 12-hour total shutdown along National Highway-2 (NH-2), a vital artery for the state, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.Advertisment In a public statement, CoTU highlighted that the ethnic conflict, which began on May 3, 2023, continues to linger unresolved after nearly three years. The organisation pointed fingers at the former BJP-led state government under Chief Minister N Biren Singh and MP Sanajaoba, accusing them of exacerbating Manipur"s ethnic divisions. Since the violence erupted, CoTU has observed the 3rd of each month to honour the “valiant fallen heroes” and community members who, according to the group, protected Kuki-Zo territories from encroachment by non-tribal groups. This year"s 'Separation Day' on October 3 will be marked with heightened resolve to underscore the Kuki-Zo community"s physical and demographic separation from the majority Meitei population, urging the Government of India to acknowledge this divide. During the shutdown, all commercial establishments, educational institutions, and markets along NH-2 will remain closed, with exemptions granted only for medical emergencies and funeral processions. CoTU expressed deep appreciation for the Kuki-Zo community"s steadfast support during these challenging times and urged continued solidarity in their pursuit of justice and autonomy."
