A key review meeting took place on Tuesday between officials from the New Development Bank (NDB) and the state Tourism Department to evaluate the project's advancement. Preliminary site work is already in progress, with earth excavation commencing at the Lower Terminal Point in Riat Laban.

Civil construction at the Lower Terminal—located near Madan Laban Nepali Secondary School in Riat Laban—is slated to begin in January 2026, while development at the Upper Terminal close to Shillong Peak will start soon. The 896-metre aerial ropeway will include six support towers and advanced 8-seater detachable gondola cabins.

According to official sources, the project is targeted for completion and operation by June 2028 if timelines are met, though efforts are underway to advance it to July 2027.

The lower terminal will serve as the primary drive station, with the upper one functioning as the return station. Both facilities will feature ample space for efficient passenger movement, along with essential amenities.

The cutting-edge Monocable Detachable Gondola technology, provided by the internationally acclaimed French firm POMA, will enable a quick four-minute journey with a 299-metre vertical ascent at a speed of 5 metres per second, accommodating up to 600 passengers hourly. Riders will enjoy panoramic vistas of Shillong city and its picturesque hills from secure, enclosed cabins equipped with automatic doors.

The terminals are planned as lively tourist centres, complete with landscaped gardens, cafeterias, souvenir shops, kiosks, beverage outlets, waiting areas, and well-maintained restrooms.

Upon completion, Meghalaya's inaugural passenger ropeway will improve access to the renowned Shillong Peak, elevate the state capital's status as a top hill station attraction, generate employment opportunities, and foster sustainable tourism development.
