Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) accused the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government of failing to pressure the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to expedite the investigation into the November 22, 2022, Mukroh firing incident that left five Meghalaya villagers and one Assam Forest guard dead.

Addressing the media, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said three years have elapsed since the CBI took over the case, yet no chargesheet has been filed and no arrests made, reflecting “complete apathy” on the part of the state government.

“It is the bounden duty of the MDA government to relentlessly follow up with the CBI and ensure justice for the victims. Their silence amounts to betrayal of the people living along the border,” Synrem stated.

He reminded that the HYC had demanded exemplary punishment for the Assam Forest personnel who allegedly fired indiscriminately on villagers attempting to stop timber smuggling. Separate judicial inquiries were set up by both Meghalaya and Assam governments, but neither report has been released or acted upon to date, he alleged.

On the third anniversary of the tragedy observed last Friday, the Dorbar Shnong of Mukroh also voiced anguish over the continued delay in delivering justice.

Synrem warned that until the long-pending inter-state boundary dispute is permanently resolved, border residents will remain vulnerable to similar violent confrontations, and such incidents could recur at any time. He urged the Conrad Sangma government to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves instead of allowing the case to languish indefinitely.
