Meghalaya: HYC Seeks CBI Assurance Over ‘Place of Worship-Like’ Structure in Shillong Office Premises

Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) met the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong, Meghalaya, demanding clarity about a structure inside the agency’s campus that reportedly resembles a religious place of worship.

Led by HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem, the delegation approached the senior officer after receiving no response to a previous written complaint on the same issue.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Synrem said the DIG categorically denied the existence of any place of worship within the CBI premises. The official described the structure as a simple relaxation and meditation facility intended exclusively for the well-being of staff members living in the residential quarters.

While emphasising that the HYC has no objection to any faith or religion, Synrem reiterated that government institutions must strictly adhere to secular principles. “India is a secular nation that does not promote or favour any particular religion. Allowing symbols or structures that appear religious inside a central investigating agency would compromise its neutrality,” he stated.

The leader made it clear that the organisation has no issue if the facility remains a secular meditation or relaxation centre. However, he warned that any attempt to convert it into a place of worship in the future would face strong opposition from the HYC.

“We are taking the DIG’s assurance at face value and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Should the meditation centre be turned into a religious site later, we will not hesitate to protest and take appropriate action,” Synrem added.

The HYC has urged the CBI to ensure the structure is used only for the purpose stated and maintains the secular character of the institution.
