Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the NPP-led MDA 2.0 Government to provide a clear, written assurance outlining concrete steps to control influx and safeguard the land rights and identity of the indigenous communities of Meghalaya, asserting that oral promises are no longer acceptable.

Speaking to the media, KSU general secretary Donald V. Thabah emphasised that verbal statements “can be given by anybody” and lack credibility. He insisted that the union expects a detailed, documented plan from Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on legislation aimed at protecting indigenous identity, preventing illegal immigration, and securing land ownership rights.

Thabah recalled that the government had previously assured the KSU that the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) would either be amended or bolstered with stronger provisions to tackle infiltration. The union now awaits tangible action in the coming days to restore public confidence.

Reacting to the Chief Minister’s recent indication that a new law—potentially building on MRSSA safeguards—may be introduced, Thabah said the KSU will reserve its opinion until the full text is made available. He stressed that every clause and sub-clause would be thoroughly examined to assess whether the proposed legislation can serve as an effective barrier against the influx.

The KSU’s strong stance follows fresh concerns raised by various pressure groups over illegal immigration. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reiterated the government’s commitment, stating that multiple layers of surveillance have been activated and existing mechanisms strengthened over the years. He added that the state is studying recent national-level laws to explore their possible adaptation in Meghalaya.
