Meghalaya Coal Auction Flops: Just 1.67% Sold, 210,000 MT Unsold Amid Delays

Shillong: A mere 3,563 metric tonnes—barely 1.67%—of the 2,13,567.99 MT of inventoried coal put up for auction in Meghalaya was sold earlier this year, the Justice (Retd) BP Katakey Committee revealed in its 33rd interim report.

The dismal outcome has left 2,10,004.99 MT unsold, with no auctions held since April 17 due to monsoon disruptions and lack of bidder interest.

Acting on Meghalaya High Court directives, the panel urged Coal India Limited (CIL) and the state to expedite disposal from designated depots. Despite consultations with local industries, the committee found that amending the Revised Comprehensive Plan, 2022, is the only viable solution—a proposal approved by the Oversight Committee on July 9, but yet to be notified.

The report stressed immediate auctions post-amendment, in line with clauses 8(j) and 10(p) of the plan, to comply with Supreme Court orders and clear stockpiles swiftly.

Justice Katakey warned that delays risk prolonged environmental hazards and revenue loss, calling for urgent government action to finalise the amendment and resume transparent bidding.
