Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who oversees the Home (Police) department, emphasised the administration's dedication to protecting all residents, especially when lives are at risk.

"No further elaboration is required—we will ensure robust protection. The police have already initiated steps to bolster security protocols," Tynsong stated.

Addressing the HNLC's assertion that a recent IED explosion was retaliation for Dhar's alleged refusal to pay extortion demands, Tynsong dismissed the claims, noting that the government possesses no such intelligence and Dhar has not reported receiving any demand letters.

He pointed out the outfit's inconsistent statements, recalling that the HNLC previously alleged Dhar had complied with payments but now claims he has ceased doing so.

"I won't speculate on these accusations, but they plainly amount to extortion, which the government will not tolerate in the state," Tynsong declared firmly.

Regarding the HNLC's broader claim that multiple legislators from the Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions have been targeted with extortion notes, Tynsong said he could not confirm their validity.

Despite the tensions, Tynsong reaffirmed the government's willingness to restart dialogue with the militant group for peace.

However, he delivered a clear warning: authorities will rigorously apply the law against any entities or persons engaging in illegal actions that undermine public safety and stability.

In a related development, police have detained two overground workers of the HNLC—Richard Suchen and Pynshaitbor Syih—in connection with the IED blast.
