UDP Urges Meghalaya Govt to Revive Peace Talks with HNLC After Recent IED Blast

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has called on the Meghalaya government to make concerted efforts to resume dialogue with the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

The party called for the talks so that the state could have lasting peace and security.

The appeal comes in the wake of an IED explosion on December 15 at the construction camp of Dhar Construction Company near Shymplong village in East Jaintia Hills district. The blast damaged a water tanker but fortunately caused no casualties. Authorities have attributed the incident to the HNLC, viewing it as an attempt by the militant outfit to re-establish its presence.

Addressing the media, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne pointed out that the HNLC had earlier participated in peace negotiations, with some positive developments recorded initially. "We do not have clear details on what led to the breakdown of those talks or the reasons behind the HNLC's withdrawal," he stated.

Chyne emphasised that the party, along with his personal stance, strongly encourages the HNLC leadership to return to the negotiation table in the interest of regional stability and harmony.

He further expressed hope that the state government would take sincere steps to facilitate the outfit's return to discussions, paving the way for a peaceful resolution to the longstanding issue.
