According to police, approximately five unidentified masked persons suddenly pelted stones at the vehicle, causing him to sustain injuries to the head. The attackers fled the scene toward a nearby forest as local residents and shopkeepers rushed out upon hearing the commotion.

Sources close to the matter indicated that the attack may be linked to ongoing tensions surrounding Prof. Biswal's recent appointment by NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla as Registrar-in-Charge of the university's main Shillong campus.

Various student bodies had reportedly urged him against assuming the role at the Shillong campus, citing objections to the appointment.
