Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong, addressed the media, stating that the ATS will focus on tackling terror-related activities, including bomb threats and suspicious individuals, to ensure the state remains free from terrorist incidents.

He said that the unit was formed following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs to create a specialised team to handle terrorism cases.

Davis NR Marak, Deputy Inspector General of Police, explained that while existing police units manage various aspects of law enforcement, the ATS will exclusively focus on terrorism, handling investigations, operations, and intelligence gathering.

The squad currently comprises a small team of Meghalaya Police officers but is set to expand with additional personnel. The ATS is divided into two specialised groups: one trained for jungle warfare and the other for urban operations. Both groups will receive advanced training and equipment to effectively counter terrorism.

Tynsong assured that the ATS has sufficient manpower for now, but the state is addressing overall police shortages through ongoing recruitment drives. Additionally, the police will leverage data from the Integrated Command and Control Centre to monitor illegal activities.

To strengthen the judicial process, the government has appointed a dedicated Director for the Directorate of Prosecution and is recruiting specialised personnel, such as Assistant Public Prosecutors. Tynsong also noted that data from the Command and Control Centre will be seamlessly integrated with the Police Department to enhance operational efficiency.

To further improve investigative capabilities, all districts in Meghalaya have been equipped with mobile forensic crime scene units, fully prepared for advanced investigations.
