Mizoram: People’s Conference Joins Dampa Bypoll Race with K Zahmingthanga

Mizoram’s opposition People’s Conference (PC) party announced its decision to participate in the upcoming by-election for the Dampa assembly seat in Mamit district, scheduled for November 11.

Party president Vanlalruata revealed that PC vice president K Zahmingthanga has been selected as the party’s candidate and will submit his nomination papers on Tuesday, the final day for filings.

Four other candidates from major political parties in Mizoram have already filed their nominations for the Dampa bypoll.

The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has nominated Mizo singer and preacher Vanlalsailova, while the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) has chosen its senior vice president and former health minister R Lalthangliana.

The Congress has fielded its vice president and former minister John Rotluangliana, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has selected Lalhmangaiha, a recent addition to the party who previously contested the Dampa seat in two state assembly elections.

Nomination papers will undergo scrutiny on Wednesday, October 22, with the deadline for withdrawal of candidatures set for Friday, October 24. The by-election was triggered by the passing of MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.

According to the final electoral roll published on September 30, the Dampa constituency has 20,790 voters, including 10,185 women. The constituency features 41 polling stations, with Silsury-I having the highest voter count at 1,103 and Zopui the lowest at 30. Vote counting is scheduled for November 14.
