According to an official statement, the letter was fabricated with malicious intent and falsely attributed to the Union Minister.

The Assistant PS of the Ports, Shipping and Waterways for Sonowal, Mukul Chandra Lahkar said the act amounts to serious forgery and misuse of official identity, aimed at spreading misinformation and damaging the reputation of a constitutional authority.

The complaint has been filed at Parliament Street Police Station, seeking registration of a case under relevant legal provisions and a priority investigation to identify those responsible for the alleged forgery.

In the FIR, the complainant stated that the forged document appeared to have been created to cause political disharmony, particularly at a time when Assembly elections in Assam are expected to be announced, and to bring disrepute to the Union Minister, who enjoys an unblemished public record both at the Centre and in the state.

The official confirmed that a copy of the forged letter has been submitted to the police as part of the complaint. Law enforcement agencies have been urged to initiate a detailed probe and take strict legal action against the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, the Minister’s office has clarified that the letter circulating online is entirely fake and has no official authenticity. The public and media organisations have been advised not to circulate unverified documents and to rely only on authorised government sources for information.

Police officials said further investigation is underway.
