PM Narendra Modi to Address Nation at 5 PM Today, Subject Undisclosed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to deliver a national address at 5 PM today, according to senior government officials.

While the topic of the address remains undisclosed, it has sparked widespread speculation about its focus.

The timing of the speech is noteworthy, coming just a day before the rollout of the GST 2.0 reforms, which could be a likely subject. Other potential topics include the recent U.S. restrictions on H1-B visas, impacting many Indian tech professionals, or the ongoing trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington, D.C.

Since assuming office in 2014, PM Modi has used national addresses to announce major policy decisions.

On November 8, 2016, he revealed the demonetization of ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes. On March 12, 2019, he spoke about the Balakot airstrikes following the Pulwama attack.

In 2020, he addressed the nation twice—on March 24 to declare a three-week COVID-19 lockdown and on April 14 to extend it. On May 12, 2025, his last address detailed Operation Sindoor, India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

The upcoming GST 2.0 reforms, effective from the first day of Navratri, are expected to dominate discussions. These reforms will reduce GST slabs to two—5% and 18%—covering most goods, while luxury items will face a 40% tax.

The changes will lower prices for essentials like ghee, ketchup, coffee, paneer, electronics, and medicines. Car buyers are among the biggest beneficiaries, with reduced tax rates prompting several automakers to announce price cuts, boosting festive season demand.
