Sankarshan Thakur, Editor of The Telegraph, Passes Away at 63

Sankarshan Thakur, editor of Kolkata-based The Telegraph, died on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the age of 63. Born in Patna in 1962, Thakur began his journalism career in 1984.

Sankarshan Thakur, editor of Kolkata-based The Telegraph, died on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the age of 63.

Born in Patna in 1962, Thakur began his journalism career in 1984 with SUNDAY magazine. Known for his insightful political writing, he authored Subaltern Saheb, a biography of Lalu Prasad Yadav, and The Brothers Bihari, exploring the lives of Yadav and Nitish Kumar.

He also published monographs on the Kargil War, caste-based honour killings in Uttar Pradesh, and Pakistan.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared condolences on X, describing Thakur as a “brilliantly incisive writer” whose analyses of Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir were widely respected.

“He informed and enlightened readers while championing India’s liberal, democratic, and secular values,” Ramesh wrote. “His passing marks a significant loss.”

He added, "Liberal, democratic, secular, and pluralistic India has lost one of its strongest defenders."

Thakur’s contributions to The Telegraph and Indian journalism remain a testament to his dedication and intellect.
