Large parts of the Northeast continued to reel under cold weather conditions on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of dense fog, falling day temperatures, and fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh over the next few days.

According to the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati, dry weather prevailed across Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during the last 24 hours, while light rain was reported at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh. The department said light to moderate snowfall is very likely in the higher altitudes of Arunachal Pradesh, even as the rest of the region remains largely dry.

The weather pattern is being influenced by a cyclonic circulation over Tripura and its neighbouring areas, extending up to 1.5 kilometres above mean sea level. Meteorologists said this system, combined with prevailing winter conditions, is contributing to increased fog formation and suppressed daytime temperatures across the Northeast.

The IMD has issued a warning of dense fog at isolated locations in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. Shallow to moderate fog is also expected during the early morning hours, which may affect visibility and disrupt road, rail, and air traffic in some areas.

Temperature trends indicate that minimum temperatures across the region are likely to remain largely unchanged, though a gradual rise is expected in the coming days. However, maximum temperatures are forecast to fall by two to three degrees Celsius, remaining below to appreciably below normal at several places.

On Tuesday, Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 21.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 14 degrees Celsius. Shillong witnessed a sharp dip in night temperature, settling at 4.9 degrees Celsius, while Kohima and parts of Arunachal Pradesh also experienced near-freezing conditions during the night.

The IMD’s five-day outlook suggests that dry weather will continue to dominate most northeastern states, with intermittent snowfall remaining confined to the higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh. Morning fog and mist are expected to persist across the region, with no major change in overall temperature patterns.

For Guwahati and its adjoining areas, the local forecast indicates fog or mist during the morning hours, followed by partly cloudy skies later in the day. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 21 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees Celsius respectively.

The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during early morning hours and to stay updated through its official platforms, including the ‘Mausam’ app for location-specific forecasts, ‘Meghdoot’ for agrometeorological advisories, and the ‘Damini’ app for lightning-related warnings.
