GUWAHATI: The 21st Capt Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament concluded with a thrilling grand finale at Nehru Maidan in Duliajan on February 14, attracting a large crowd of football enthusiasts, local residents and sports followers from across the region.

The prestigious tournament was organised by the Red Shield Gunners under the aegis of Spear Corps and witnessed enthusiastic participation from teams and spectators over several weeks, establishing itself as one of the prominent football events in the area.

The final match between Lekang Sports Club and Barekuri FC turned into a high-intensity contest, with both teams displaying tactical discipline, speed and technical skill. The match ended 1–1 after extra time, with neither side able to break the deadlock despite multiple scoring opportunities. The title was eventually decided in a penalty shootout, where Lekang Sports Club emerged winners with a 5–4 victory, sealing the championship.

The closing ceremony was attended by Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding, Spear Corps, along with the parents of Capt Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra. Their presence added emotional significance to the memorial event, which is held annually in honour of the decorated officer from Assam.

The programme also featured cultural performances by local artists, highlighting Assam’s traditional music and dance forms, adding a festive touch to the sporting event. A ceremonial Torch Run was organised as part of the closing programme, symbolising remembrance and continuity of the tournament’s legacy.

Addressing the gathering, Lt Gen Pendharkar congratulated both teams for their performance and sportsmanship and spoke about the role of sports in promoting youth engagement and community participation. He also paid tribute to Capt Jintu Gogoi for his service and sacrifice.

The tournament concluded with prize distribution to the winners and runners-up, bringing to an end weeks of competitive football and community engagement in Duliajan.
