80-Year-Old Assam Athlete Wins Three Gold Medals at National Masters Games in Maharashtra

Bhadeshwar Phukan, an 80-year-old athlete from Assam’s Sivasagar district, has brought laurels to the state by winning three gold medals at the National Masters Games held in Nashik, Maharashtra.

A retired teacher by profession, Phukan secured the top honours in three field events—discus throw, shot put, and hammer throw—at the national-level competition, which was organised from January 28 to January 31. His remarkable performance has been widely appreciated, serving as an inspiration for sportspersons across age groups.

On his return home, Phukan was accorded a warm and enthusiastic welcome by local residents at Chunpora in Sivasagar, who celebrated his achievement with pride.

The National Masters Games are organised under the aegis of the Masters Games Federation, an India-based sports body that aims to support the Olympic movement and promote the “sport for all” philosophy of the Olympic Charter. The federation functions on the lines of the International Masters Games Association.

Speaking to the media, Phukan said he has always been passionate about sports and has actively participated in various sporting events throughout his life. Emphasising that age has never been a barrier for him, he encouraged people to remain active and pursue sports regardless of their age.
