The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei was killed in a massive joint military operation carried out by the United States and Israel. The 86-year-old ayatollah, who ruled Iran for more than 36 years and was one of the world’s longest-serving authoritarian leaders, was reportedly targeted in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran. According to U.S. officials, along with Khamenei, between five and ten top Iranian leaders were also killed in the same operation.

Trump Claims Intelligence Role, Calls Killing “Justice”

U.S. President Donald Trump calls it a victory through a series of posts on Truth Social, calling Khamenei “one of the most evil people in History” and describing the strike as “not only Justice for the people of Iran, but for all Great Americans, and those people from many Countries throughout the World, that have been killed or mutilated by Khamenei and his gang of bloodthirsty THUGS.”

“This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country,” Trump wrote, urging Iranians to seize what he framed as a historic opportunity for political change.

The U.S. President also claimed that American intelligence agencies played a direct role in tracking and targeting the Iranian leader. “He was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems,” Trump said, adding that bombing would “continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or as long as necessary” to achieve what he described as “peace throughout the Middle East and, indeed, the world.”

A senior Israeli official claimed that Khamenei’s body had been recovered, and a similar statement was made by Trump on social media.

Iran Declares 40 Days of Mourning

The Iranian government announced 40 days of public mourning following what it described as the “martyrdom” of the Supreme Leader. Iran's State media portrayed Khamenei’s death as a sacrifice in the face of US-Israel aggression and vowed that Iran’s leadership and armed forces would remain firm.

However, conflicting signals emerged shortly after the announcement. The official X (formerly Twitter) account associated with Khamenei posted a cryptic message in Persian reading, “In the name of Nami Haider (peace be upon him),” fueling speculation in some Iranian media outlets that the Supreme Leader might have survived the strike.

Authorities have not publicly addressed the post, and no independent verification has emerged to contradict the official confirmation of his death.

What does the death of Khamenei mean globally and regionally?

Khamenei’s death is a shock to Iran’s political system, as the Supreme Leader holds ultimate authority over the military, judiciary, and key state institutions. Analysts say his elimination from the scene could mean internal power struggles, as to who will lead the war now, accelerating regime instability.

U.S. and Israeli officials have previously mentioned that weakening or collapsing Iran’s ruling establishment was part of their strategy in the long term goal.

As tensions increase, international observers are closely monitoring developments in Tehran and across the region, amid fears of retaliatory strikes, and further military action in the days ahead.
