Living man declared 'Dead' in Jonai: Govt official's bizarre move sparks outrage in Assam

A bizarre and alarming incident in Jonai has triggered widespread outrage after a senior government official reportedly declared a living man as “dead” in official records. The revelation has left the local community stunned, raising serious questions about administrative negligence within the Jonai Revenue Circle.

According to sources, the Circle Officer of the Jonai Revenue Circle is at the centre of the controversy.

The victim, Jayanta Upadhyay, a resident of Simen Chapori, had been trying for several months to get his land registered under the Mission Basundhara scheme. Despite being the rightful possessor of the land, his applications were repeatedly rejected by the Circle Officer on various grounds.

When Upadhyay applied again, officials allegedly failed to find a legitimate reason to deny his request. In an inexplicable move—and without conducting any field verification—the Circle Officer, along with the Lat Mandal, declared the fully healthy and living man as “dead” in government records, effectively blocking his land registration process.

The shocking act has drawn strong criticism from the Gorkha Students’ Union, which condemned the negligence in harsh terms. The organisation has demanded a thorough investigation into the conduct of the Circle Officer and the Lat Mandal, urging authorities to take strict and exemplary action against those responsible.

Local residents have also voiced concern over the incident, stating that such administrative lapses undermine trust in government processes and cause severe distress to citizens.

Further action from the district administration is awaited.
