Midnight drug bust in Guwahati: Youth held with Heroin and ₹1.63 lakh cash

In a late-night operation, police arrested a youth with banned drugs and a large sum of cash in the city on Tuesday. The incident occurred around midnight near Ulubari, triggering concern among local residents.

Based on information provided by alert locals, Paltanbazar Police apprehended the accused and recovered 12 grams of banned heroin packed in 99 containers. Police also seized cash amounting to ₹1.63 lakh from his possession.

The arrested youth has been identified as Akhilesh Kumar Verma, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. According to police sources, Verma had been living in Guwahati as a tenant for a considerable period and is suspected to have been involved in illegal drug-related activities.

During the operation, police also recovered a scooter without a number plate from the spot, which is believed to have been used by the accused.

Local residents reported that the youth had been camping suspiciously in the area for the past 10 days. After noticing his unusual movements, they detained him and immediately informed the police, who then took him into custody.

Police have launched further investigation to ascertain the source of the drugs and to determine whether the accused has links with any wider drug network.
