"A tense showdown unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi traded sharp remarks during a discussion that quickly escalated into a heated exchange.Advertisment Raising the issue while addressing Speaker Om Birla, Rahul Gandhi questioned the government"s move to grant full immunity to Election Commissioners — a step he described as unprecedented. “I have a question regarding the decision taken for the first time in the history of India, that Election Commissioners will be given full immunity. This was done by no other government earlier,” he said, demanding an explanation from the Home Minister. Gandhi went on to challenge Amit Shah directly, asserting, “Amit Shah ji, I challenge you — I challenge you to have a debate on my three press conferences.” He further sought clarifications on how voting was conducted in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Responding to Gandhi"s remarks, Speaker Om Birla turned to the Home Minister and asked him to address the concerns raised. Amit Shah, however, rebuked the manner in which the question was posed. “I have been here for 30 years. The Opposition leader asked me to answer, but let me make this clear — Parliament will not function according to your wishes,” he said. Shah added that he would respond to all questions from the Opposition but only in the order and time he deemed appropriate. “They must have the patience to listen. They cannot decide the sequence of my speech. I will decide that, since it is me who is speaking,” he asserted. Following the exchange, Rahul Gandhi attacked the Home Minister"s response, claiming that Shah appeared rattled. He said the remarks made by the Home Minister were “defensive,” suggesting that the government was unwilling to engage openly on the matter.
