Pijush Hazarika Hits Back at Gaurav Gogoi’s “Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma?” Remark

Guwahati: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika on Tuesday launched a sharp counterattack on Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi over his repeated question, “Who is Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma?”, calling him out of touch with Assam’s realities and sentiments.

In a strongly worded statement, Hazarika said it was “quite natural” for Gogoi to ask such a question, arguing that the Congress leader may not be familiar with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s journey because of their vastly different backgrounds. He pointed out that Dr. Sarma rose from a humble, ordinary family without any political lineage, attributing his political rise to hard work, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to Assam.

Taking a personal swipe, the minister contrasted Sarma’s background with Gogoi’s, claiming that the APCC president was “born with a silver spoon” and came from a family with an established political legacy. Hazarika asserted that this difference perhaps explains why Gogoi fails to recognise the Chief Minister’s political journey.

Hazarika further alleged that most members of Gogoi’s family are British citizens and that Gogoi himself has spent considerable time abroad, suggesting this distance from Assam could be another reason behind his remarks. He further said that it was not surprising for a family with alleged links to Pakistan to question the identity of Assam’s Chief Minister.

Questioning Gogoi’s emotional connection with Assam, the minister claimed that the Congress leader was not genuinely committed to the sentiments of the Assamese people. He also criticised Gogoi’s command over the Assamese language, stating that his inability to speak, read, or write Assamese fluently further alienated him from understanding the Chief Minister’s appeal among the masses.

Defending Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hazarika described him as a widely discussed national figure, deeply loved by the people of Assam, who has dedicated his life to the state’s development. He went on to call Sarma one of the most impactful Chief Ministers Assam has ever seen, highlighting his rise from a modest background to the state’s highest executive office.

Hazarika expressed hope that Gaurav Gogoi would now have a clearer understanding of who Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is, remarking that if the message was not fully understood, Gogoi could seek clarification from someone proficient in Assamese.
