Samson’s Blazing 89 Powers India to 253/7, England Set for Big Chase in T20 World Cup Semifinal

India posted a total of 253 for 7 in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal after a spectacular innings from Sanju Samson, putting England under immense pressure in the run chase.

Samson, who had struggled to find a spot in the playing XI earlier in the tournament, once again delivered when it mattered the most. After his unbeaten 97 against West Indies in the final Super Eight match, the right-handed batter carried his momentum into the semifinal with a stunning knock of 89 from just 42 balls. His innings was packed with aggressive stroke play, including eight fours and seven sixes.

The Indian batter set the tone early in the innings, striking consecutive boundaries off Jofra Archer in the opening over. England had a chance to dismiss him early when captain Harry Brook dropped a straightforward catch at mid-on while Samson was on 15. The missed opportunity proved costly, as Samson went on to dominate the bowling attack.

Batting on a high-scoring Wankhede surface, Samson thrilled the crowd with a series of powerful shots. He reached his half-century in just 26 balls, smashing Liam Dawson for a six over extra cover to bring up the milestone.

Samson built crucial partnerships to strengthen India’s innings. He added 94 runs in just 45 balls with Ishan Kishan, who scored a quick 39 from 18 deliveries. Later, Samson stitched together a 43-run stand in 22 balls with Shivam Dube, who contributed 43 from 25 balls.

India’s powerful batting display continued even after Samson’s dismissal. Hardik Pandya chipped in with a brisk 26 from 11 balls, while Tilak Varma played a short but explosive cameo of 21 off just seven deliveries.

Overall, India’s batters unleashed a boundary barrage, striking 19 sixes and 18 fours during the innings, with a massive 186 runs coming through boundaries alone.

For England, Will Jacks emerged as the most effective bowler. He first removed Abhishek Sharma early in the innings and later claimed the crucial wicket of Samson. Meanwhile, pace spearhead Jofra Archer endured a tough outing, conceding 61 runs in his four overs, although he managed to dismiss Tilak Varma.

With India finishing at 253/7, England now face a daunting target of 254 runs as they begin their chase in the semifinal.
