Woman drug supplier arrested in Tripura with nearly 6 kg of illegal cannabis

In a major breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on narcotics, the Sonamura Police on Tuesday arrested a woman allegedly involved in drug trafficking. The accused, identified as 23-year-old Popi Akhtar, hails from Matinagar, Purba Tilai under the Sonamura Police Station area.

Despite continuous anti-drug drives across Tripura, traffickers have reportedly been adopting new methods to continue their illegal trade. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by the Sonamura Police Station carried out a raid at the woman’s residence.

During the search operation, the police recovered 5.985 kg of illegal dry cannabis. Additionally, a vehicle bearing registration number TR 07-0413, which was allegedly used to transport the drugs from Sonamura to various locations, was seized.

A case has been registered against the accused under the NDPS Act, and she has been produced before the court with a prayer for police remand. Police hope to extract more information from her regarding the wider network of drug suppliers active in the region.

Sonamura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das stated that interrogating the accused is expected to reveal the identities of others connected to the drug trade. “Once their involvement is established with evidence, appropriate legal action will be taken against them,” he added.

The arrest marks yet another significant step in Tripura Police’s effort to curb the growing menace of drug trafficking in the state.
