Sources said that the operation was triggered by credible intelligence indicating the presence of six to seven ULFA-I cadres in the 6 Mile Lekang Khampti region. Assam Rifles personnel swiftly mobilised, launching a targeted raid that escalated into a prolonged gun battle when the militants opened fire upon spotting the approaching team.

A senior police official confirmed, “Based on the tip-off, our forces initiated the search. In the ensuing firefight, one ULFA-I insurgent was neutralised, while the others fled the scene.”

Sources revealed that the neutralised militant belonged to the same faction responsible for a recent assault on an Army Company Operating Base (COB) in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district, eastern Assam, just last week. The retaliatory fire from the Assam Rifles forced the remaining suspects to scatter into the dense terrain.

In the aftermath, troops recovered an HK-series assault rifle, a grenade, and three bags from the site, believed to be the militants' possessions. A comprehensive manhunt is underway, bolstered by aerial surveillance via helicopters and drones, along with tracker dogs to scour the surrounding areas.

The region has been placed under a tight security cordon, with joint operations involving multiple agencies aimed at apprehending the fugitives. “We are conducting coordinated efforts to capture the members of this banned outfit, who targeted the Kakopathar Army COB,” an official stated, underscoring the commitment to restoring peace in the border districts.
