Arunachal: Two Killed in Elephant Attack in Tirap's Namsang

Two residents of Namsang village in Arunachal Pradesh's Tirap were reportedly killed after being attacked by a wild elephant herd. Locals have called for strict measures to control man-elephant conflict in the area.

Two residents of Namsang village in Arunachal Pradesh's Tirap were reportedly killed after being attacked by a wild elephant herd.

The deceased were identified as Tanen Nocte (46) and Nanthok Hodong (45).

They were fatally trampled by a herd of wild elephants near a village school in Tirap district on the night of October 20.

According to local reports, this is the fourth elephant-related fatality in the Deomali area this year and the fifth in the past 12 months.

Locals have sounded an alarm over the escalating human-elephant conflicts in the region. Among the victims was former MLA Kapchen Rajkumar.

Following the incident, a response team comprising the range forest officer, medical personnel, and police officials visited the site to evaluate the situation and complete necessary formalities. On Tuesday, Environment & Forests Minister Wangki Lowang, accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner B Tawsik, inspected the location to assess the circumstances.

The district administration expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and said that it is working closely with the Forest Department to provide relief and support to the families of the deceased, with added efforts to continue to address the growing challenge of human-wildlife conflict in the area.
