Anil Kumble Soaks in Kaziranga’s Wild Beauty, Applauds Assam’s Cricketing Talent

Former India captain and legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble is on a two-day visit to the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, marking his first-ever trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Accompanied by his wife, Kumble arrived on Tuesday with a camera in hand, eager to explore the famed wildlife of Assam’s iconic park.

Kumble began his tour with a morning safari in the Buhrapahar range, followed by an afternoon visit to Bagori, where he spent extensive time photographing birds along the highway and deep inside the forest. A passionate wildlife photographer and bird enthusiast, he was thrilled to spot Hoolock gibbons, one-horned rhinos, deer, and several bird species.

Speaking about the experience, Kumble said,

“This is the first time I have visited Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. It was wonderful to be in this lovely place. I witnessed incredible wildlife — Hoolock Gibbon, one-horned rhino, various bird species. The hospitality has been great, and the conservation efforts here are truly commendable.”

He also expressed admiration for the local women’s self-help groups, praising their involvement in wildlife protection and the region’s rich handloom traditions.

“It’s lovely to see women coming out to protect the wildlife and the jungle. Their work is truly appreciated,” he added.

Kumble continued his exploration on Wednesday morning with a jeep safari in the Kohora range, further immersing himself in Kaziranga’s biodiversity.

Reflecting on cricket, Kumble said the Indian team carries strong momentum, expressing hope for a solid comeback in the second Test against South Africa scheduled in Guwahati on November 22. He warmly congratulated Uma Chetry for her achievements with the Indian women’s cricket team and praised Riyan Parag, saying the young Assam men’s cricketer has a promising future.”

“Assam has a lot of talent. I send my deep regards to Uma Chetry and Riyan Parag. Riyan has already played matches for the senior men’s team, he’s a regular in the IPL, and his domestic career is fabulous,” Kumble noted.

The former India head coach also reminisced about his previous cricketing days in Guwahati.

“I last visited Guwahati when I was part of the Indian team dressing room. I haven’t seen the new ACA Barsapara Stadium yet. My last match here was at the Nehru Stadium,” he said.

It may be mentioned that Kumble’s visit has generated excitement among fans and conservation enthusiasts, as one of India’s greatest cricketers experiences the natural pride of Assam while acknowledging the state’s growing cricketing footprint.
