Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that his family has no property or wealth, and that his only income comes from his official salary.

Addressing a journalist’s query regarding accusations levelled by opposition parties, Sarma stated, “I own no property whatsoever. My wife earns her livelihood through honest means, without any unlawful activities. If someone is earning legitimately, where is the problem?”

The Chief Minister’s comments come amid heightened scrutiny of politicians’ financial assets across the country.

On October 8, Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, initiated a criminal defamation lawsuit against Raijor Dal leader and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, along with others, for allegedly making false and defamatory remarks about her and her company, Golden Threads of Assam.

In a post on her official Facebook page, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma voiced her frustration over what she described as “politically motivated smear campaigns,” expressing regret over the ongoing controversy.

However, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa, according to the ADR Report, declared assets worth Rs 17.27 crore and liabilities of Rs 3.51 crore. Sarma, a doctoral holder, reported the annual self-income in the region at ₹25.94 lakh.

It may be mentioned that as of 2025, Himanta Biswa Sarma stands at the ninth position in the top 10 richest Chief Ministers in India.
