Assam: Female Safari Elephant ‘Swarnimoyee’ Dies After Collapsing Twice Near Bagori

A female private safari elephantSwarnimoyee, aged around 50 years, died on Friday after collapsing twice along National Highway 715 near Bagori.

The elephant, owned by Upendra Saharia of Darrang, was being handled by her mahout Harichandra Nath, with Ibrahim Ali as the attorney holder. Swarnimoyee carried the microchip number 961001000002487.

According to officials, the elephant first collapsed at around 8:00 AM on the highway. A veterinary team comprising Dr. Biswajit Baruah, Dr. Saurav Buragohain (FVO) and Dr. Mohit from CWRC immediately attended to her.

Following treatment, the elephant managed to stand and was guided across the highway with the assistance of other elephants.

However, she collapsed again in a nearby field shortly afterward. Despite continuous efforts by the veterinary team, Swarnimoyee succumbed to her condition at around 1:45 PM.

A post-mortem examination is currently underway to ascertain the exact cause of death.
