Assam: Jagiroad Turns Chaotic as Tiwa Students Block National Highway-27

Jagiroad: Massive tension gripped Jagiroad town in Morigaon, Assam after members of the Tiwa Students’ Union staged a sudden highway blockade on National Highway-27, bringing vehicular movement to a complete standstill for several hours.

The protesters, led by the student organisation, squatted on the highway and raised slogans demanding immediate resolution of long-pending issues concerning the Tiwa community, including proper implementation of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, land rights, and development packages.

The blockade triggered severe traffic congestion on both sides of the crucial Guwahati-Nagaon route, leaving hundreds of vehicles, including passenger buses and goods carriers, stranded for hours.

As police attempted to clear the highway, the situation quickly escalated into a fierce clash between security forces and agitators. Protesters pelted stones while police resorted to lathicharge and tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Several protesters and several police personnel, including an officer, sustained injuries in the violence. Some agitators were detained, officials said.

Local administration and senior police officials later rushed to the spot and held talks with student leaders, following which the blockade was withdrawn in the evening.

The Tiwa Students’ Union warned of intensifying the agitation across Tiwa-dominated areas if the government continues to ignore their legitimate demands.
