Assam: Poor Families in Cachar Left in Crisis Over Pending PMAY Funds

In Katigora, Cachar district of Assam, nearly 50 families are facing severe hardship after demolishing their old homes with the hope of constructing new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

The families of Sunapur village had begun building permanent houses using PMAY funds. While they received the first instalment, the subsequent payments have not been released by the concerned government officials. This delay has brought construction to a halt, leaving many without proper shelter.

At present, the residents are forced to spend nights in unsafe temporary arrangements. With the monsoon approaching, their living conditions are expected to worsen, raising serious concerns about health and safety. 

The villagers expressed, “We have only received two instalments. Many people started building houses using PMAY funds, but now only the walls are up, and we are living in very poor conditions. With the rainy season, it becomes even more difficult to stay in these unfinished houses.”

The families have repeatedly raised their grievances with departmental authorities and local representatives, but no solution has been provided so far. 

Also, they have appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for urgent intervention, requesting the release of pending funds so that construction can be completed before the rains begin.

This situation highlights the difficulties faced by poor families relying on government housing schemes, where delays in fund disbursement can leave them exposed to severe risks, emphasising the need for timely monitoring and effective administration of welfare programmes.
