The arrests were made after Lakhimpur animal activists submitted a formal complaint at the North Lakhimpur Police Station on 19 November, alleging a sudden and unusual decline in the population of stray dogs in the area. According to the activists, several neighbourhoods that previously had a visible presence of street dogs reported that many of the animals had gone missing without explanation.

In their complaint, the group expressed concern that the dogs may have been illegally captured and possibly trafficked for the dog meat trade. The complaint urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and take strict action against those involved.

Following the complaint, North Lakhimpur police initiated an investigation, gathering information from various parts of the town and examining possible links to illegal animal trade activities. Based on the findings of the probe so far, three individuals were arrested in connection with the case.

“Three of them have been arrested,” said an official from the North Lakhimpur police department, adding that the investigation is still at an early stage.

Police officials stated that further inquiry is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the dogs and to establish whether there is a wider network involved. Authorities are also working to verify claims related to the illegal capture and transportation of animals.

Meanwhile, animal welfare activists have welcomed the arrests and have called for continued vigilance to ensure the protection of street animals. They have urged the administration to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and enforce existing animal protection laws more effectively.
