Assam's GI-Tagged Karbi Anglong Ginger Exported to London

Assam marked a significant moment in its agricultural export journey by exporting the first consignment of GI-certified ginger produced in Karbi Anglong to United Kingdom.

State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora presided over the ceremony held at Krishi Bhawan in Guwahati and was attended by the senior agriculture officials, exporters and stakeholders in the sector.

The trial shipment of 21.2 metric tonne is destined to London, and may act as a kind of gateway to the growing role of Assam in the world spice markets.

“It is not just some kind of shipment; it is a pride of our farmers. There is something special about Karbi Anglong ginger which has made it a special identity. Its move to enter into the London market is an indication of novel opportunities to manufacturers in the region,” said Bora.

Karbi Anglong’s GI-tagged fresh ginger has now set its course for the international market in London — a proud and historic moment for Assam’s agricultural sector.

APEDA has been in favour of this development by providing closer contacts between Assam exporters and foreign consumers. According to Vineeta Sudhanshu, who is the General Manager of APEDA, it is the first direct shipment of GI certified Karbi Anglong ginger in the UK.

Sudhanshu later on added that the export was after an international buyer-seller conference that took place earlier this year, through which the foreign importers tested the quality and authenticity of the ginger.

“The shipment is an experimental shipment. In case consumers in the UK take favourably and the product performs as expected then we have repeat orders and an increase in volume in the near future,” Sudhanshu said.

Karbi Anglong ginger has a GI tag which will occupy a legally protected name and add value to its brands in competitive global markets.

Officials in the Agriculture Department are hopeful that with direct export route, the prices of farmers will be enhanced by reducing the dependence of domestic wholesalers with the effect that demand level and incomes in the hill district will be stable.

It is an agricultural push that the observers see to be part of Assam in its quest to become a producer of high-quality niche agricultural products. The success of the trial would be guaranteed to establish long-term trade relations with European consumers and increase the export of other value-added goods.

Meanwhile, Assam Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will come to Kokrajhar on March 13, to lay foundation stones of a number of development projects.
