Congress Announces 42 Names as Assam Assembly Election Candidates, Gaurav Gogoi Named for Jorhat

The Indian National Congress has announced a list of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, with its state chief, Gaurav Gogoi, being named as the candidate for the Jorhat Constituency.

Guwahati: The Indian National Congress has announced a list of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, with its state chief, Gaurav Gogoi, being named as the candidate for the Jorhat Constituency.

Gaurav Gogoi, who currently represents Jorhat in the Lok Sabha and serves as Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lower House, may be one of the most influential candidates.

The announcement was made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Parliamentary Board through a press release issued by General Secretary KC Venugopal.

Other notable inclusions in the first list are:
- Ripun Bora from Barchalla
- Debabrata Saikia from Nazira
- Pranjal Ghatowar from Chabua-Lahowal
- Pranati Phukan from Naharkatia
- Utpal Gogoi from Sonari
- Ajoy Kumar Gogoi from Demow

The Congress is expected to release additional lists in the coming days as nominations and campaigning intensify for the Assam Assembly elections scheduled in 2026.

It may be mentioned that earlier, it was reported that the Congress may field Gaurav Gogoi for the Jorhat seat, but there were speculations that the Congress may release the list only after dates for the pollings were announced.

The Congress in Assam in the past few days have witnessed certain setbacks as some of its leaders, including former APCC president Bhupen Borah, switched sides with the BJP.

However, party insiders claimed that they were confident that the exit of certain members would not affect the party’s influence in the state.
