Dacoity Plot Hatched at Homestay: Guwahati Police Bust Six-Member Gang

Guwahati: In a major breakthrough in the sensational Ganeshpara dacoity case in Guwahati, Fatasil Ambari Police in Guwahati have arrested two key accused involved in the crime. 

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Numal Mahatta, six hardcore criminals were involved in the incident.

The prime accused, Hilwart Sangma (20) and Rony Sangma (28), both residents of Sonapur, were arrested from Byrnihat in Meghalaya. Police revealed that the entire dacoity was planned at Pinaki Homestay near Kamakhya Gate, where Rony Sangma was working as a manager.

The dacoity took place on January 19 between 9:15 pm and 9:21 pm at Ganeshpara. DCP Mahatta stated that all the accused switched off their mobile phones near the Bhootnath Temple area at around 6:33 pm before committing the crime. After the incident, they fled to Byrnihat and turned their phones back on four days later, on January 24, in an attempt to evade tracking by the police.

Mahatta further said that both Hilwart and Rony were previously arrested by Sonapur and Hatigaon police in Guwahati in connection with robbery-related cases.

“All of them are hardcore criminals, and their modus operandi was to use various tactics to mislead the police, which delayed the investigation. However, after receiving concrete information, we managed to apprehend four of them, and the remaining accused will be nabbed soon,” he added.

A Meghalaya-registered vehicle was used during the operation, and the machete used in the crime has been recovered from Khanapara.

Two accused are still absconding. One fled during a police operation, and both are believed to have escaped to another state. Earlier, Ratul Mali and Jeherul Haque were arrested for conducting reconnaissance on the instructions of the absconding accused.

Police also informed that Hilwart Sangma had been released from jail just a month ago and had previously served prison terms for his involvement in dacoity cases in Sonapur and Hatigaon areas of Guwahati.

The investigation is ongoing.
