Drug Suspect Injured in Police Encounter in Assam's Barpeta

A suspected drug trafficker was injured in a police encounter in Tarabari under Barpeta district in the early hours of Saturday. The injured has been identified as Anowar Hussain (32), a resident of Milekuchi.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 2 AM when Hussain allegedly attempted to escape from custody. He had been detained earlier in the night for his suspected involvement in a drug trafficking network operating in the area.

Police said Hussain had confessed during interrogation that he had narcotics hidden at his residence. Based on this input, a team of Tarabari Police took him along to recover the drugs. However, on the way, Hussain reportedly pushed the officers and tried to flee. In response, police opened fire, injuring him in the left leg.

Hussain was immediately taken to Barpeta Medical College & Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The arrest comes days after a major seizure on 6 November, when Tarabari Police recovered 11 soap cases filled with suspected heroin from an Alto vehicle. The drug carriers had abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

Following the encounter, senior police officials, including Barpeta Superintendent of Police Sushanta Biswa Sarma, Additional SP (Crime) Bidyut Bikash Bora Bhuyan, and DSP Jitesh Barman, visited the spot and reviewed the situation.

The district police said further investigation into the drug network is underway.
