Speaking to the media after taking over, Dr Sarma emphasised discipline, punctuality and accountability in the functioning of the department.

“I will ensure punctuality, which I also maintained during my tenure as Superintendent of GMCH. I request everyone to be punctual, sincere and committed to their work,” he said.

Dr Sarma encouraged NHM staff to approach him directly with work-related concerns, assuring timely intervention.

“If any staff member faces issues, they can come to me directly for solutions,” he added.

Highlighting his priorities, Dr Sarma said resolving long-pending departmental issues and introducing new programmes would be key focus areas.

“We will address old problems and simultaneously introduce new plans and projects to strengthen the National Health Mission in Assam,” he said.

Reiterating his commitment to child healthcare initiatives, Dr Sarma underlined the importance of flagship programmes under NHM.

“The Snehasparsha programme provides financial assistance for specialised treatment of children below 14 years, while free treatment for children with Congenital Heart Disease is a compassionate initiative that has been running for the past 15 years. I will ensure these programmes continue effectively,” he said.

It may be mentioned that in June this year, Dr Sarma was earlier reported to be critically ill and had undergone advanced treatment at the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) in Kolkata. According to sources, he was suffering from severe kidney-related complications and was scheduled to undergo a kidney transplant surgery at the Kolkata-based hospital. He was shifted from Guwahati to Kolkata for specialised medical care after his condition deteriorated, following which medical teams at RTIICS completed the required evaluations and treatment procedures.

After successfully undergoing treatment and recovery, Dr Sarma has now resumed active administrative duties by joining the National Health Mission, Assam.

Dr Sarma’s appointment is expected to bring administrative experience and renewed momentum to the functioning of NHM Assam.
