Guwahati HC Directs Government to Submit Investigation Progress in Zubeen Garg Death Case

The Guwahati High Court today took a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the late singer Zubeen Garg. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a detailed investigation into his death, filed by Abhijeet Sharma and Palash Ranjan Baruah, was heard before Justice Michael Zothankhuma and Justice Mital Thakuria. Senior advocate K. N. Choudhary represented the petitioners.

Under PIL 46/2025, the Court directed the government to submit a comprehensive progress report on the investigation by December 17, 2025. The respondents in the case include the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of DONER, Ministry of Culture, the State of Assam, the High Commissioner of India in Singapore, Trend MMS Pvt Ltd, Shyam Kanu Mahanta, and Siddharth Sharma.

Today’s hearing was hailed by the petitioners as a major breakthrough in ensuring judicial oversight of the investigation. The Court’s order will allow it to review any lapses by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and ensure accountability in the probe.

Senior advocate K. N. Choudhary will continue to lead the proceedings in the High Court on behalf of the petitioners. The development has been described as a positive sign for justice in Zubeen Garg’s case, opening a clear path for legal scrutiny and transparency.

During the hearing, the Court also noted the challenges faced by witnesses in appearing before the SIT, emphasizing the need for proper facilitation of testimony in ongoing investigations.

Petitioners Abhijeet Sharma and Palash Ranjan Baruah expressed optimism, calling the Court’s direction “a significant step forward for justice in Zubeen Garg’s case.”
