"Guwahati: Ahead of his departure for Davos to represent Assam at the World Economic Forum (WEF), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the people of the state through social media last night, announcing a series of key decisions.Advertisment Police Recruitment, Transfers and ADRE Relief Among the major announcements, the chief minister said the upper age limit for recruitment to the post of police constable has been increased from 25 to 26 years. Explaining the rationale, Sarma said several aspirants had approached him seeking relaxation, particularly regarding the cut-off date mentioned in recruitment notifications. “If we revised the cut-off date to January 1, 2025, the lower age limit would also increase. To avoid that, we have retained the lower limit at 18 years and enhanced the upper limit to 26,” he said. To further assist applicants, the government has also extended the application window by 15 days, allowing candidates additional time to complete the process. In another significant move, the Assam government will open the "Swagata Swatirtha" portal from February to facilitate mutual transfers. The portal will be accessible to Grade III and Grade IV employees appointed through the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE), as well as other state government staff. The chief minister stated that the decision was made after receiving numerous requests from recently appointed employees seeking transfers on mutual grounds. Addressing concerns raised by Divyang candidates, the chief minister announced that applicants who appeared in the recent ADRE under the Divyang quota will be allowed a second medical examination. “I listen to the concerns of the people. A second medical examination will be conducted for Divyang applicants. However, I urge those who are not eligible under this category to refrain from misusing the quota,” he said. Additionally, Sarma informed that he has instructed Education Minister Ranoj Pegu to open the portal for Venture School teacher applications at the earliest. Assam on the Global Stage at Davos At the beginning of his address, the chief minister spoke about his upcoming participation at the World Economic Forum in Davos, noting the sub-zero temperatures he would be facing. Calling it a moment of pride for the state, Sarma said representing Assam at such a global platform was a significant recognition. “I feel privileged to showcase Assam"s resources, culture, tourism potential and investment opportunities before global business leaders. I seek the blessings of the people of Assam so that I can represent the state to the best of my ability,” he said. Prime Minister"s Visit and Cultural Spotlight Reflecting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi"s recent visit to Assam, Sarma said the Prime Minister had played the role of an ambassador for the state by highlighting Assam"s cultural heritage on social media. He specifically referred to the Bagurumba dance performance, which received wide appreciation. “The performance was truly beautiful. I thank the young artistes, BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary and all Bodo cultural organisations involved. People are comparing it to the Olympic opening ceremony in China. Such comparisons give me immense joy and reflect the cultural vibrancy we have achieved,” Sarma said. On Congress and Infrastructure Push The chief minister also responded sharply to opposition from the Congress and its state president Gaurav Gogoi on several infrastructure projects, particularly the proposed Kaziranga elevated corridor. Sarma said the opposition lacked an understanding of the project"s economic and ecological benefits. He stated that the corridor would significantly reduce travel time and fuel consumption, while also generating an estimated Rs 700 crore in GST revenue. Importantly, he said, the project would help protect wildlife by reducing animal deaths during annual floods in Kaziranga. “The people of Jorhat are witnessing development and are not protesting,” Sarma said. “When I took oath in 2021, I never imagined Assam would see a semiconductor plant, urea and ammonia factories, a 3,200 MW thermal power plant, the Guwahati Ring Road, or the Kaziranga elevated corridor. What we are seeing today is beyond imagination.” He further announced that the Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge over the Brahmaputra is scheduled to open in February, while construction of the long-awaited Jorhat–Majuli bridge will begin shortly, with its foundation stone to be laid next month. Concluding his address, Sarma said Assam has entered a new phase of confidence and determination. “Today, Assam is honest, unshakable and confident. We will not allow anyone to stand between us and development. Even if the Himalayas stand in our way, we will climb them,” he asserted.
