"Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today underlined the State government"s sweeping reforms in the education sector, noting a sharp decline in student numbers after the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination and emphasising the need for sustained intervention to reduce dropout rates.Advertisment Speaking at the launch of the Prerona Scheme, the Chief Minister said that although educational opportunities have expanded significantly compared to previous decades, the transition from secondary to higher secondary remains a challenge. He reminded that there was a time when Assam had only three medical colleges, but today the State boasts 15 medical colleges, collectively offering seats to 2,000 medical students every year. “In the coming days, five more medical colleges will be added,” he announced. The CM also highlighted the presence of 20–22 engineering colleges, a large number of universities and multiple polytechnic institutes across the State, reflecting a substantial rise in higher education capacity. To motivate students and support their continuity in education, the government has launched various incentive-based schemes. “We are not only improving the education system, but also creating employment opportunities after education,” he said. He added that earlier, due to lack of facilities, many youths had dropped out mid-way and went astray, but the situation has changed dramatically. “We have provided 1.5 lakh government jobs without anyone having to pay a single rupee,” he asserted. The Chief Minister announced that from next year, Class IX students will be required to open bank accounts, enabling smoother transfer of government assistance. While this time the new scheme is being implemented for four months, he said that it may be extended to six months from next year. In another major update, he said that the bicycle distribution scheme, earlier meant for Class IX students, will now be extended to Class V students, helping younger children access schools more easily. Launching the Prerona scheme, the CM said, “We are investing in a brighter future for every child. The Prerona scheme will empower 4.4 lakh HSLC-appearing bhagins (girl students) with monthly stipends, easing their studies, reducing dropouts, and boosting confidence.” He described the initiative as a major push towards strengthening the foundation of Assam"s secondary education system.
