The submission marks a pivotal moment in Case No. 18/2025, one of Assam’s most closely followed investigations in recent memory.

At the CID headquarters, the day began with heightened security and intense movement as the SIT’s chief investigating officer Rosie Kalita arrived, joined by other key members of the probe team. Within minutes, officials began loading sealed boxes into two specially arranged vehicles—each box containing critical evidence, confiscated items, and thousands of pages of documents compiled over months of investigation.

Among the materials transported were Zubeen Garg’s personal items seized from various locations, forensic laboratory reports, digital evidence, and witness testimonies. Nearly four large evidence boxes were placed inside the CID vehicles before the convoy departed for the court under escort.

Sources confirmed that the SIT’s chargesheet includes the names of all persons identified as accused during the investigation. Over recent months, the team examined a wide range of witnesses—family members, close friends, professional associates, and individuals who were in frequent contact with the artist. Forensic reports from Assam’s laboratories have also been attached to the chargesheet, reinforcing the scientific basis of the SIT’s findings.

Public Prosecutor Bijan Mahajan Explains What Happens Next

Earlier, speaking on the procedural aspects following the filing, Public Prosecutor Bijan Mahajan made an important clarification:

“I will not comment on the identities of those mentioned or any other information the charge sheet may contain. Only the SIT officials can comment on this if they wish, with due respect to the fourth pillar of democracy.

As for who can obtain certified copies of the charge sheet, under the Gauhati High Court’s Criminal Rules and Orders, any Indian citizen may apply to the court for a copy. But if a person with no connection to the criminal case applies without showing sufficient cause, the judicial authority will reject the application. If the applicant can show a valid reason, he or she may be granted the copy.

For those arrested in the case, if they seek bail after the charge sheet is filed, they may not get it, as the charge sheet will be submitted within the due legal timeframe. Therefore, they cannot claim default bail.”

Mahajan’s clarification adds crucial legal context as the SIT prepares to place every detail of its investigation before the judiciary.

Convoy Moves Toward Court

By late morning, the CID convoy left the headquarters for the Kamrup CJM Court, carrying the evidence boxes and the voluminous chargesheet. The submission is expected to reveal long-awaited answers and lay the roadmap for the next legal steps in the death investigation of one of Assam’s most influential cultural figures.

As the chargesheet officially enters the judicial domain, public attention now turns to what it contains—and the implications it may have for the accused, the investigation, and the larger quest for clarity surrounding Zubeen Garg’s untimely death.
