Third Assam Visit in 3 Months: PM Narendra Modi to Launch Key Corridor

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Assam on 14 March to launch a major infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming connectivity in the Northeast. During his visit, he is set to lay the foundation stone for the ₹22,864 crore Silchar–Guwahati high-speed corridor, marking his third trip to the state in the past three months.

The proposed expressway will directly link Silchar and Guwahati through a four-lane, access-controlled greenfield alignment. Stretching nearly 167 kilometres, the project is expected to drastically cut travel time between the two cities from more than eight hours at present to roughly four and a half hours once completed.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that key procedural steps, including the tendering process and necessary environmental approvals, have already been completed. Land acquisition is progressing, clearing the way for construction to begin soon.

In addition to the expressway foundation ceremony, the Prime Minister is also likely to inaugurate a newly constructed flyover in Silchar, aimed at easing urban traffic congestion and improving local transport efficiency.

The corridor is expected to serve as a strategic economic lifeline for southern Assam and neighbouring states such as Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur. By strengthening road connectivity across the region, the project is anticipated to boost trade, encourage tourism, and generate employment opportunities.

Officials believe the expressway will significantly enhance logistical efficiency and regional integration, reinforcing the Centre’s broader push to upgrade infrastructure across the Northeast.
