“What’s Happening in Northeast’s Top Universities?” — Gaurav Gogoi Writes to PM, To Raise Issue in Parliament

Congress MP and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday has voiced grave concern over the recent controversies unfolding in several of the Northeast’s leading universities.

Gogoi said he will raise the issue in the upcoming session of Parliament, while also revealing that he has written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation at Tezpur University.

Over the past few months, reputed institutions like Tezpur University, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), and Gauhati University have been embroiled in disputes and allegations that have cast a shadow over their academic environment. Gogoi remarked that these developments are “deeply disturbing” for institutions that serve as the lifeline of higher education and research in the region.

“Several leading universities in the Northeast are making headlines for the wrong reasons. The actions of certain Vice-Chancellors have created serious concern, with students and faculty expressing widespread dissatisfaction. This has also begun to impact academic performance and university rankings,” Gogoi said in a social media post.

He further mentioned that he has already written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the matter concerning Tezpur University, but his concerns extend to the entire region.

“I will raise this issue seriously during the forthcoming Parliament session and hope to receive a positive response from the Prime Minister’s Office,” he added.
