Who Would Have Thought? World Cup Star Uma Chetry Helps Family in Paddy Fields

In a touching display of humility and connection to her roots, India’s Women’s Cricket World Cup–winning team member and Assam’s pride Uma Chetry was seen helping her family harvest paddy in her hometown Bokakhat in Assam's Golaghat district.

Uma arrived at her home in Kandhulimari village on Monday night. The next morning, she maintained her strict training routine with a net practice session at the Bokakhat Public Playground. After practice and lunch, she accompanied her mother to the nearby paddy fields, carrying a basket filled with tea and snacks. 

In the fields, Uma picked up a sickle and joined her family in cutting paddy, blending effortlessly into rural life. Locals were thrilled to see an international cricket star working alongside villagers, showing that global fame has not distanced her from her roots.

Uma Chetry, a wicket-keeper batsman for the Indian women’s national team, was part of the squad that won the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup and has also represented Assam in domestic cricket. She made her ODI debut for India against Bangladesh during the World Cup and has been widely recognized for her contributions to the team, including her pivotal role in the 2022 Asian Games.

Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selected Uma Chetry as the replacement for Yastika Bhatia in India’s squad for the last three-match IDFC First Bank ODI series against Australia and the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

Bhatia had suffered a left knee injury during India’s preparatory camp in Vizag, and the BCCI medical team continues to closely monitor her recovery.

Despite her growing international responsibilities, Uma took time to participate in her family’s paddy harvest, demonstrating a rare balance between professional commitment and personal roots.
