The participation reflected the expanding reach of downhill mountain biking competitions in the region and across the country.Since its launch in 2018, the Assam Downhill Championship has played a key role in promoting gravity-style mountain biking in the Northeast. Over the years, the tournament has helped nurture local cycling talent while also positioning Assam as a growing hub for competitive downhill racing.This year’s championship was held on a challenging 1.13-kilometre trail carefully designed and constructed by the Shillong-based Trail Head Crew. The track featured steep descents, technical rock zones, jumps, berms, and other demanding sections that tested the riders’ control, speed, and endurance. The course design received widespread appreciation for raising the technical standard of downhill racing in the region.AdvertismentThe Men’s Elite category witnessed intense competition among riders from across India. Meghalaya’s Taitus Marak delivered a technically precise and dominant run to claim the gold medal. Virendra Mali from Maharashtra finished second, while Karnataka’s Samarpan Jain secured the bronze medal after a closely fought contest.In the Hardtail category, riders demonstrated the versatility of hardtail bikes on rugged downhill terrain. Meghalaya’s Pynshngain topped the category with a controlled and agile performance, followed by Joel Chettri from Sikkim in second place and Lammeo War from Meghalaya in third.The Junior category highlighted the emergence of young gravity-sports talent from the Northeast. Meghalaya’s Edgar Nonglait won the event in the junior segment, while Koto Losou from Nagaland and Assam’s Rajdeep Sharma finished second and third respectively.AdvertismentIn the Masters category, Mizoram’s Miller B. Renthlei delivered the fastest overall time to emerge as champion among veteran riders.
